My 3 Favorite Ways to Style High-Waist Shorts

Hey Fashionista! Over the weekend my BFF asked if I had a pair of high-waisted shorts. I assured her I did. But when I pulled them out she laughed insisting I try on a pair of her black denim high-waisted shorts. When I did, I totally felt silly, because her pair of shorts actually went up to my belly-button, as where mine did not.

Oops! :)

Now I'm totally in love with this style. And have discovered my 3 favorite ways to style high-waist shorts for spring -- that will work for cooler days, hot temps and fancy nights out.  Check out my style tips below!

1.) For Cooler Days/Nights

High Waist Shorts + Thermal Top + Printed Tank + Tennis Shoes

This is precisely what I wore yesterday for "Sunday Funday." Since the weather was in the low 60's by the beach, I made sure to wear a thermal with my shorts and tropical loose-fit tank to stay warm while remaining fashionable.  The colors complimented each other nicely and made me feel shine-y even though the sun hid for most of the morning. :)

Shorts: Aardvarks | Thermal: Billabong | Tank: Target

2.) For Hot Days

High Waist Shorts + Tank + Graphic Loose-Fitted Tank + Sandals

Hot days are coming.  And this outfit combination will work well in the heat.  Keeping things light and short while adding a dash of print and color really makes this outfit playful and "cool."  Don't be afraid to pair printed high-waist shorts with a graphic tee in another color.  It'll make your look fresh and exciting.

Shorts: Spyder (Hermosa Beach, CA) | "Surf Gypsy" Tank: Diane's Beachwear (Manhattan Beach, CA) | Sandals: Rainbows

3.) Casual Evenings Out

High Waist Shorts + Camisole + Cardigan + Belt + Sandals

Once you're wearing a pair of high-waist shorts that flatter you in all the right ways, you're not going to want to take them off. You can wear them down to the beach or at the pool. But when evening comes, all you have to do is switch your tops and shoes and you're ready to go out for drinks.

Keep in mind....that just because your shorts may be casual, doesn't mean you can't fancy them up!

Like, by mixing in elegant elements, as I did with my black cardigan and strappy sandals.

Might I suggest applying small doses of black for insta-glammification? (I might've made that word up?) lol But you get the point! ;)

Shorts: Spyder (Hermosa Beach, CA) | Camisole: Forever 21 | Cardigan: Forever 21 | Belt: LOFT | Sandals:

All in all, there are TONS of ways to wear high-waist shorts. But there are only three main ways you're going to use them, should you buy a pair! My favorite spots to buy high-waist shorts are at surf shops. However, if you don't live near one, shop these surf brands online, like:, or even

However, you'll WANT to try them on before committing to a pair. These shorts will come up to your natural waistline.  They might be a little snug, but that's the way they're supposed to be.

And guess what else is kinda fun? They have a button-fly. Remember those? From, like 1990?? So great!!!!

LoL! Anyway! I hope you enjoyed reading my 3 favorite ways to style hig-waist shorts! Have a beautiful day, Fashionista!!

Spring "Beach-y Casual" Look

(Umm...can you say gorgeous?! I love my beach town!)

Hey Fashionista! I hope you had a great weekend! I spent mine back in my hometown at the beach.  It was a blazing 88 degrees of fire-y sunshine pretty much the entire time I was there. One of my favorite outfit combinations for a beach heat-wave are cut-off shorts + tank + flip flops + trucker hat.

Even though, there are TONS, literally....tons of ways to wear this combination, I chose to do it up in a spring "beach-y casual" look sorta way. Which made sense, since I adore beach style and spring is just a few weeks away - officially!

So, check out my outfit details below, and see how you can style it this way as well!

(Please excuse my leftover Cajun French fries and Sprite in my hand lol)
Tank Top: Old Navy | White Denim Shorts: LOFT | Sandals: Rainbow Sandals

I'm a fan of white denim. Doesn't matter if they're shorts, pants or skirt. I love the look! Especially for spring. And when it's warm out, the last thing you want to do is wear a color that attracts heat, like black. So! I paired my white cutoff shorts with a deep blue floral tank that has ruffled edges. The perfect spring tank in my opinion! With Rainbow Sandals - the cornerstone to any beach girl's style. ;)

In short, the best kind of style is the effortless kind, where it makes you look your best without all the fuss. I assure you, this spring "beach-y casual" look is just that. Do you like it? Are you going to try it? Let me know in the comment section below! Wishing you a lovely day!

The Ultimate Fashionista, My Mom

Hey Fashionista...  :)  I believe it's important to recognize and honor those who have shaped our lives positively.  So, today I wanted to open up and share with you about a woman who has influenced my spirit of style and outlook on life, ever since I took my first breath. My mom.  This day weighs heavily in my heart and on my mind...because, one year ago today, my mother passed away.  Sadly, what was supposed to be a harmless condition turned into a misdiagnosed health condition for far too long.  We discovered she had advanced stages of breast cancer....and then, a month and a half later, I held her as she took...her last breath.

It's surreal to me...a woman so full of life to no longer be a part of mine.  And to now only cling to memories..or a photograph.

Slowly, as time moves on, I'm learning that the key to finding peace, is honoring her life by cherishing the qualities that made my mom, the woman she was, the woman who touched my heart so deeply.

So...if you don't mind, today, I wanted to share with you a few things about my mom that made her special to me and also the ultimate Fashionista in my book.

My mom was not the kind of person to blend in with the crowd. Oh, no. She stood out. Not in a "sore-thumb" kind of way. But more like,  a super star in regular, day-to-day life.  I know people tend to exaggerate the details of loved ones that have passed away. But, I assure you, she was the real deal.  You would recognize her by her short-shorts (check her out to the right!) , 4" heels and what she called her "bug-eyed sunglasses." (Or at least that's what my dad and his buddies jokingly called them).  It didn't matter if we were walking down the street or at Disneyland, she was always dressed to kill and didn't mind what people said. Or if they stared.  She kept smiling and laughing while carrying on with her own parade.

I used to watch (with bright-eyes, no less) as she picked out her outfit for work. She always pulled out the chic-est high heels, fancy dresses and chunky gold jewelry to adorn herself with for the day. Impractical at times? She didn't care.  If it made her smile, that's all that mattered.  Her bright blonde hair always sparkled and her skin was always so tan.  (Never understood how I didn't inherit that trait!!! lol) As a kid, the greatest fun was playing in her closet; dressing up in her dresses and high heels - often times with my cousins. (Gah! I wish I had pictures of that!!)

What was really special about my mom's quirkiness was her light.  Others may have tried dimming it because she was too shiny, but she kept her blinders on and paid no attention whatsoever.  I think the most important lesson in my mother's example, is to always honor your own unique way about you.  Whether it's a certain color, a particular print, or style. Stay faithful to it, no matter what people say about you.  It's what makes you unique and a bright shiny force on this planet.  And you know what's great about that? You become the example, the change, that gives others permission to do the same in their life.

I really appreciate you letting me share with you a little bit about my mother.  I hope her life reminds you to be true to yours.  As always, I love hearing from you. Feel free to leave a comment below or email me at info(at)TheFashionistaCoach(dot)com! I wish you a wonderful day, Fashionista! Lots of love to you!
