Q & A Fashionable Thursday: Denim Jeans

Q: My jeans just gave out on me- and it seemed like it went by quickly.  How should I take care of them to make them last longer?

Thanks!

-Tara (Chicago)

A: Hi Tara!

Thank you for your question- very good topic to cover!  The best thing you can do is skip the dryer altogether.  The reason why I say this is because the heat destroys stretch fibers, making jeans looser over time.  To maintain the color, pull your jeans inside out and wash in cold water.

I hope that answers your question, Tara!

How to Throw a Clothing Exchange Party

Have you ever gone to a clothing exchange party?  I haven't until a few weeks ago!  I became inspired to host my own after seeing a commercial about a clothing exchange party in Hollywood.  I always wondered how to pull one off so I thought I would experiment with my girlfriends.  I mean, why not?  We all love to shop with our girls, so this shouldn't be any less fun.  Actually this could be even more enjoyable because credit cards and cash aren't necessary! :)  Do you want to learn how to throw a clothing exchange party?  I guarantee a fabulous time for you and your girlfriends!

Here's what you'll need to do...

Set the Date... sounds like I'm referring to a wedding date, huh?!  haha ;)  Pick your party date!  Friday or Saturday after dinner is usually the best time.

Food & Drinks...Decide what food and drinks you'll have at your clothing exchange party.  If you decide to have your party after dinner, pick a dessert.  Chocolate chip cookies, brownies, cupcakes are a hit.  If you decide to bake them yourself, make sure you do so the night before the party. If you would like some help in this area, ask your girlfriends to bring something.  We all know how sweet and helpful they are in this department. Just let them know what your overall food theme is...for example: if you're having chocolate desserts, have them bring a milky cocktail (like chocolate wine!) to accentuate the flavor.

Send out an Evite...Create a free invitation via Evite.com with your party details...date...time...address.  Add specific notes like where they could park, or if you have animals.  Some friends might be allergic. Ask your girlfriends to bring clothes they don't wear anymore that are still in good shape.  Remind them that this also includes shoes, purses, necklaces, rings, earrings, scarves and watches too! Accessories seem to be the most popular exchanging items.

Prepare Your Home...This is the fun part!  Decide which space you'd like to use in your home.  Wherever you have the most space that can fit as many chairs as you'll need is your best bet.  Figure out where you can display the goods.  Use your coffee table, media center, dining room table or fold up tables to display clothes and accessories.  If you have a few extra bucks, purchase a garment rack at Target for less than $30.

Devote a space for drinks and desserts. I always use the bar space in my kitchen to display drinks and desserts.  Wherever you can fit all the dishes and drinks will be great!  Make sure you have enough glasses for your guests.  Bring out any platters to display those delicious goodies!  Have some fun and add cute, girly napkins and wine charms.  I highly recommend Sur la Table or Pier 1 Imports for these sweet little finds.  They usually cost $3-$6 at most.

Mirrors! Small vanity mirrors are awesome for trying on necklaces and earrings.  If you have a full length mirror in your bedroom, bring that out too!  Your friends will want to check themselves out in the mirror. Beware: If your friends like what they have on, it will turn into a fashion show! (Check me out on the left!- LOL JK!) Impromptu fashion shows are usually derived from alcohol consumption.  In that case you're probably going to run low at this point, so be sure to have your boyfriend or husband on call to fetch more wine from the store. ;)

Playlist...You know how you always hear fun, upbeat music at your favorite store?  That's because it gets us in the mood to shop!  Go through your playlist and pick fun, upbeat songs to get your night off on the right foot.

Clean Your Casa...The most used spaces for the evening will be your bathroom (hello dressing room!) and where ever you have the clothes displayed.  Make sure you vacuum your space, clean the bathroom counters, toilet- (gross, I know!) and mirror.  Place a yummy candle in there as well and maybe a few flowers for a fun touch.

VOILA! You're all set for your party!  When your guests arrive, serve them a drink, help them display their clothes and accessories in the right places and start your clothing exchange party!  Enjoy your time, Fashionista! Take lots of pictures and share them with me and the rest of the Fashionistas on my Facebook Page----> www.Facebook.com/TheFashionistaCoach

Q & A Fashionable Thursday: Leggings!

Q: Hi Fashionista-
With summer here, I am looking for somewhere that has a good selection of leggings that I can wear under cute sundresses??
Any suggestions?

-Jamie (California)

A: Hi Jamie!

Thanks so much for your question!

Leggings look so cute under Summer dresses.  Several of my favorite places to go are: American Apparel (They have an assortment of colors between $14-$38),  Foot Traffic (multiple colors and priced at $20) and Forever21.

I would choose knee-length or mid-calf leggings to stay true to the Summer season.  You'll stay cool and look balanced with a shorter dress.

Also, have fun with color!  Even though black is mainstream, try out bold blues or white for a fun fashion statement!

Hope that helps you out!  And if any other readers out there have a question, please leave a comment below or email me at Info@TheFashionistaCoach.com!

How to Wash It Wednesday: Jeans!

Welcome to the Second Edition of How to Wash It Wednesday!

How often should we wash our jeans?  4-5 Wears (Less laundry- yes!!)

What We Should Know: Durable denim is excellent at masking dirt, which is a good thing because overwashing can cause fade and fray.  To keep yours looking like new (or "weathered" just the way you want them): Throw them in the washer inside out and use cold water.  Avoiding the dryer will help retain color, too.

Exception to the Rule: Take them for a spin cycle sooner if they stretch out.  Or just toss them in the dryer for 10 minutes (but no more than that!) Spandex-heavy "jeggings" (jean leggings) should be washed after every wear so the knees don't bag.

Was this helpful?  Let me know in the comment box below- and remember, share with your friends!  Wishing you a Happy Hump Day, Fashionista!

My Favorite Fashion Quotes

Hello Fashionista! If you asked me to tell you one thing about myself that describes me best, I would say these two words: Inspiration. Junkie. Haha. Most of my friends- especially on Facebook, know I am always posting my favorite lines as regular status updates.  Upon waking in the early morning the first thing I grab is my Blackberry to check my favorite quotes and eye-opening messages from Mastin Kipp of The Daily Love.  Or, I'll crack open an inspirational book in the wee-hours of the night, curled up under the sheets (with my flashlight) trying not to disturb my husband's sleep. LOL. I seriously enjoy opening my mind and living beyond my limitations.  So, today I want to open up my inspiration library and help you move beyond your Fashion limitations.  I really hope you enjoy my favorite fashion quotes!

How to Wash It Wednesday: Bras

How to wash it Wednesday is a new Summer series to my blog!  Every Wednesday I'm going to feature a how to wash it instruction guide on an article of clothing we wear often during Summer time.  Since you spend your hard earned dollars on your clothes, it makes sense to learn how to care for them, yes?  Yes!  So here we go with our first post: How to Wash It Wednesday: Bras!

How often should we wash them? After 3-4 wears
Bras don't come into direct contact with the underarms, so they can withstand a few wearings.  They need a 24 hour period (between wears) for the elastic to recover, so try a rotation system like this....Line them up in a drawer in the A.M., take a bra from the front, then send it to the back of the line in the P.M.

Exception to the Rule:  Sweating a a lot!  If you encounter profuse sweating- b/c derrr it's hot outside!- then wash your bras daily.  Use gentle baby detergent, like Dreft.  Keeping your bra clean will lengthen the life our beautiful brazierres!

How did you like "How to Wash It Wednesday: Bras"?  Was it helpful?  Or maybe you have more insight into this topic? I'd love to hear!  Thank you for reading, Fashionista!
