Life Is Your Runway!

Photobucket

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is such a fabulous movie! Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. What I like most about the movie is Audrey Hepburn. Her entire being was so enchanting. In my opinion, she was a ‘one-of-a-kind’ lady who marched to the beat of her own heart. How great would it be if we all lived life the way she did? Opened our heart to all the magnificence in the world. Imagine all the beauty you would find – not only around you, but also in yourself.

When I made the first step towards becoming a fashionista, I picked a collection of women who were the most fashionable to me. In high school, my top 3 was: Britney Spears, my cousin Kristi, and, honestly, I can’t remember the third…but! They inspired my style choices and images that I wanted to project to the world.

As I entered my 20’s (and the corporate world), my fashion icons changed. I wanted more classic, sophisticated, fun and timeless looks. Audrey Hepburn was the ‘it’ girl on my list, as was Lauren Conrad, and Stacey London. I just LOVED the way these women dressed. Their ages varied as did their specific quality in style, but I think that's the point.  Each style icon brings a unique trait to the fashion 'table' and it is up to you to adopt the quality or not.

It's important to have a ‘north star’ guiding you with your fashion change. How does one find a fashion icon of their own? You've gotta ask yourself a few basic questions..."What women inspire you? What do they wear? Are they conservative? Do they embrace bold colors? Maybe you like the way they wear flowers in their hair. Whatever strikes you; write it down, take a mental picture of all the details you admire most about their wardrobe. Then, make an effort to incorporate these qualities into your closet.

Your life is your runway…and you are the fashionista in charge of shinning brightly everyday, wherever you go. Why not look as stunning/hip/classy/bold as you want to be?

Audrey Hepburn’s style emits beauty no matter where she was and what she was doing. She was a true style icon who truly embodied what fashion and inner beauty are all about. I hope she inspires you, as she inspired me. :)

Let's Accessorize!

Good Morning Fashionistas!….

Yes, yes, it’s Monday, again. But this Monday is extra special.  We're remembering one of the greatest men who changed the course of history in America: Martin Luther King, Jr.  In honor of his birthday, most of us have the day off and some of us are working.  For those of you working today, let's look on the bright side, we're pretty fortunate to have our jobs! They pay our bills, put a warm roof over our head and afford our basic needs. That's something to always remember and never take for granted. :) Now it's time....Let's Accessorize!!

Let’s talk FASHION!♥  Did anyone go shopping last weekend? If so, did you find the information I posted last Monday helpful? Hopefully you discovered your strengths and found clothes that show it off! Seriously, it's half the battle once you’ve got that down.

The next step you’ll want to think about in terms of upgrading your wardrobe is accessorizing. You’re a career-woman and just plain fabulous; I’m sure you have a great pair of black pants in your closet (or -on today), right? Perfect! Do you have a favorite top, too? (If your answer is no, check the ‘Deal of the Day’ for some great finds!)

Ok! The next step is taking your basic pair of pants and top to a whole new level!

My BASIC Outfit
Photobucket

My favorite scoop neck top and wide-leg trouser. :]

Now, what we want to do is emphasize this outfit with a jacket, blazer, purse, heels and jewelry. Jackets and blazers are pretty versatile because they’re so friggin’ cute and you can go from casual to professional based on the type you choose. You’re probably sensing a theme here, as I'm constantly blabbing about garments with dual functions.  What's the method to my maddness? You’ll get the most out of your purchase without spending big bucks!

I picked a couple of options from my closet to show you what kind of statements you can make with different accessories…

Let's accessorize you! How? Well, if you have a purse, a basic long necklace, solid top, and black pants, you can transform your work look in multiple ways, as I did above.  When you’re out shopping, pay attention to the different fits and shapes.  Switch up the fit of each garment to blossom and expand your look.  Make sure you check out sweaters- as they are work-appropriate too. Consider color, the length of sleeve, and embellishments. All of those elements will add pizzazz to your overall look. Remember to have fun; get creative and indulge yourself.  Want more tips on accessorizing your look? Take a peek at "Fashionable Ways to Wear a Scarf! "  Have a wonderful week!  XoXo♥

411 On Your Body Shape

Photobucket

Good Morning Ladies! How was your weekend? Mine was great! I spent time hanging with my husband while we worked on various home projects. In my downtime, I skimmed through my favorite fashion magazines and thought to myself, how does one get motivated to make a fashion enhancement to their wardrobe? With all of these ‘one-size-fits-all’ deals out there; especially with so many fashion tips and advice, it’s easy for a girl to get overwhelmed. The real question to open the doors to applying fashion deals to you is knowing the 411 on your body shape!

We went over how to purge your closet in December and gave you a shopping tip to try out as a way to kick your new year off on the right path. But I want to continue helping you uncover your inner fashionista with practical solutions to guide you along the way. While I wish I were there, in person, shopping with you, this little column will hopefully suffice.

Assuming you’ve cleared the clutter in your closet, (if you haven’t – email me!! I can help) we’re now going to discuss your shape. See, it is important to know your body shape in order to properly dress it to the nines! Let me just stop for a second and clear something up (because I know what you’re thinking!) you do not have to lose X amount of pounds before you can look fabulous! I’m serious! You’re well qualified to show off your best assets and work it, girl!

Shape is so much more than just your body weight. Take me for example. I am short (5’2”), petite, with wide shoulders and a blunt backside that makes me feel like Jennifer Lopez. I’ve spent many years despising my unbalanced figure. Tube tops accentuated my wide shoulders and I always was the shortest of my group of friends.  I prayed for 'just one more growth spirt' in middle school to take me to super-model height!!  One day (after realizing I wasn't going to grow anymore) I decided to put an end to the self-torture and experimented with clothes that focused on my assets. I embraced the good, the bad and the ugly. To my surprise, I found my niche in the fashion world.  I bought clothes that brought attention to my qualities and not my perceived negatives.

Through the torture of put-down messages we feed ourselves, we must stop and remember that we are blessed with incredible bodies! We just need to know how to dress them.  Really! Here are my favorite celebrities who wear clothes in oh-so flattering ways… Check them out and see if you can identify with their body types.

RULER (STRAIGHT SHAPE): Kelly Ripa is the typical short, petite-sweetie. Bold- even busy patterns work best on her because they give her frame volume. For women who are tiny...everywhere, extra details like fabric layering, sequins, detailed back pockets add a subtle sense of fullness.

Photobucket

FULL FIGURED: Jennifer Hudson is one hot full-figured mama! Her structured dress spotlights her tiny waistline. The top of this stunning dress keeps the girls in place and shaped. Also, having a fuller bottom half makes this a-line silhouette an instant sliming choice for Jennifer. We all know black is a great color for sliming, but it doesn’t mean it has to be dull. Adding delicate shimmer to the top and flirty fabric decals around the bust puts the focus on her top half and away from the fuller parts of Jennifer’s shape. A great way to have fun with the rules! ;)

Photobucket

APPLE: Apple shaped bodies has broader shoulders with a full bust and a full-undefined waist. Everything below the waist is more slender - usually with great legs and a flatter hinney. The key to dressing the Apple body shape is to create the illusion of a balanced body, while calling attention to the legs, hips and/or arms. Reese Witherspoon is a great example of this body type. Selecting a structured jacket like the one in the picture allows the focus to fall on the waistline and creating a more defined figure, which is what an apple shape needs. For added effect, a bold colored scarf draws your eye up to her face. A pleated skirt further defines the bottom half more so in a flattering sense because it’s flaring away from the body and bringing the focus to her legs!

Photobucket

PEAR: This shape means you carry most of your weight in the bottom part of your body (i.e. rear end, hips and thighs). What we need to do is play-up your upper body and give your lower body a slimmer sleeker look. We can do this by using color on your upper half, wide necklines, accentuate your waist and wear dark colors on the bottom. Jennifer Lopez is a classic pear-shape. Her dress works for her because it flows away from the body, taking the attention off her bottom half. An added benefit to this dress is this unusual neckline on her dress. This feature draws the eye up and brings the focus to her face, instead of her bottom half.

While there are many more shapes than the typical apple, pear, and full-figured, I wanted to cover the main points and start you off with the right problem-solving techniques. So, when you're in the dressing room trying on clothes, you'll know what features to get in order to focus on your assets.

Your Fun-Work: Now that we know the 411 on your body shape, take some time to identify your ‘assets’ and implement these guidelines/solutions on your next shopping trip! As always I am here to help you. Remember: There are solutions to every challenge! Want to know about your body shape and ways to enhance it? Swing by Fashionista Belts: The New Clothing Jewelry! Fashionable Ways to Wear a Scarf

Key Hole Tie

Photobucket

This style works best with long scarves and will keep you super warm during the winter. To achieve this style simply follow these steps:

1. Fold scarf in half lengthwise and wrap around your neck.

2. Keep the loop-end on one side and open ends on the other.

3. Slip the open-ends into the loop end; gently tighten as desired.

4. Voila!

The Wrap-Around
Photobucket

Try this look when your scarf is too cute to take off inside while mingling at a party- or lunching with the girls.
1. Place scarf evenly around your neck.

2. Wrap all the way around your entire neck

(like a noose-but, for fashionable reasons!)

3. Adjust length accordingly

The Half Wrap-Around
Photobucket

I love this look with peacoats or cropped jackets.
It shouts ‘sophisticated mama!’

1. Place scarf evenly around neck

2. Throw over one shoulder

3. Adjust to desired length

Snuggle-y
Photobucket

You know when you’re outside on a winter’s night and it’s so friggin’ cold? Well, this style works almost as well as wrapping up in a blanket by the fire.

1. Again…place scarf evenly around your neck.

2. Take both ends and gather behind your neck.

3. If there’s enough slack, wrap around a 3rd time

4. Adjust your scarf until it’s utterly comfy.

Dressy
Photobucket

Best when you’re dressed to kill for a party or date! Overcoats won’t do, they’ll just hide your beautiful outfit. Show off with this over-the-shoulder scarf look. [Note: This look is achieved best with wider scarves.]

1. Evenly wrap around neck

2. Drape one side across chest

3. Make sure you widen the fabric that is stretched across your chest in order to achieve this look

.....More scarf looks in lighter, printed fabrics.....
